Zlatan Ibrahimovic Red Card Upheld by UEFA

Jonathan Johnson of ESPN FC reported that UEFA has upheld Ibrahimovic’s red card, and he will miss at least one game as a result. According to Kris Voakes of Goal.com, UEFA will meet on March 19 to determine what punishment the striker will face for his actions. The effervescent Swede saw red for the Parisians after a tackle on Oscar in the first half, but the decision made by Bjorn Kuipers has been highly criticised.

PSG went on to win the tie in extra time on away goals despite Zlatan’s dismissal, with headers from David Luiz and Thiago Silva helping the French champions through to the quarter-finals of the competition.

While he was unhappy with his own team’s display, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho also claimed that the nature of Ibrahimovic’s tackle didn’t warrant a red card:

As noted by ITV, the 33-year-old felt as though the reaction of the Chelsea players contributed to him getting his marching orders:

„I don’t know if I have to get angry or start to laugh. For me when I saw the red card I was like ‘the guy doesn’t know what he’s doing.’

That is not the worst. The worst is when I got the red card all the Chelsea players come around. It felt like I had a lot of babies around me.“

Ibrahimovic has enjoyed a distinguished career, but for all the revered success he has had with teams on the domestic front, he’s yet to sample Champions League glory or indeed show his best form in the world’s most illustrious club competition.
