Champions League talking points: Sergio Aguero and Gabriel Jesus fire

There were wonderful wins for Manchester City and Tottenham in the Champions League on Wednesday night, while Liverpool were held 2-2 by Sevilla at Anfield.

City won 4-0 at Feyenoord and Spurs came through a tough test against Borussia Dortmund at Wembley to win 3-1.

Two up top works for Pep

The consensus heading into Saturday’s Premier League clash with Liverpool was that Pep Guardiola would continue to play Gabriel Jesus as his lone striker.

However, the Manchester City boss brought in Sergio Aguero – who had started the previous game at Bournemouth on the bench – to partner the Brazilian in attack, with promising signs.
The pair renewed their partnership in Rotterdam with both forwards getting their names on the scoresheet in the first half at De Kuip as City’s forward-minded players ran amok against Feyenoord.

It will be interesting to see if Guardiola continues playing two frontmen, starting at Watford on Saturday.

Liverpool’s soft centre

It was an awful start for Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield as Dejan Lovren’s missed kick allowed Sevilla to open the scoring inside five minutes.

Liverpool were crying out for a calming influence after the weekend hammering at the hands of Manchester City.

Instead, new personnel in front of a new goalkeeper just added to the nervousness within the squad.
The spirit Liverpool showed was admirable to turn the match on its head in such exhilarating style, and the draw is as much a result of missed chances as uncertainty at the back.

However, the way the Reds were carved open for the equaliser was not good enough.

Klopp’s side can score goals at will, but their soft-centred defence could be their undoing.

Aurier impresses on debut

Serge Aurier made his Tottenham debut in their win over Dortmund and produced an impressive performance full of energy and endeavour at Wembley.

The new signing from Paris Saint-Germain certainly did not lack confidence, playing his way out of trouble from his own by-line during the second half, and Mauricio Pochettino was delighted.
„I am so happy,“ he said in his post-match press conference.

„Serge was fantastic today. The quality that we saw from him, that is why we signed him. I think it was his first game after only one week of training with the team. He can improve and he can give his experience to the team.“
