Andre Dozzell’s injury ‘put a cloud over’ win, says Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy

Ipswich boss Mick McCarthy admits an injury to Andre Dozzell has „put a cloud over“ his side’s opening day defeat of Birmingham.

The Tractor Boys began the new Championship season with a 1-0 win over the Blues at Portman Road, with new signing Joe Garner opening his account on his competitive debut for the club.

The only negative for McCarthy was the worrying injury to Dozzell, who was stretchered from the field shortly before half-time after going over on his ankle in the penalty area.
„The worry is that it’s a cruciate but that will be confirmed one way or another when he sees the specialist on Monday,“ McCarthy told Ipswich’s website.

„In terms of result and performance it was the perfect day but obviously Dozzer’s injury has put a cloud over it.“
McCarthy was pleased with his side’s performance and was quick to praise Garner, who recently joined the club in a £1m move from Rangers.

„Joe Garner took his goal well. His movement was brilliant for the goal. It was a good move from us,“ McCarthy said.

„He has been terrific for us. He was a right handful. You’d hate to play against him ever week. He is a real problem for defenders and that is a great thing to say about a centre-forward.

„It was a great response from the players and it was vital for us, that result. Vital for me as well personally that we have played well and won.

„I’ve had lovely support but perhaps there was an element waiting to have a go just in case we got beat. I’m not blaming them because we were rubbish last year.
