Checkatrade Trophy round-up: Wins for Man City, Notts County, West Ham and Swansea

There was a busy night of Checkatrade Trophy action on Tuesday, with Man City, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United all in action.

League Two’s Notts County beat Everton U21s 2-1 in their first group game at Meadow Lane.

The home side made the breakthrough after 30 minutes through Jonathan Forte and six minutes later they doubled their advantage when Elliott Hewitt’s header was tapped in by Haydn Hollis.
Everton did pull a goal back, Harry Charsley setting up substitute Anton-Leander Donkor, but it wasn’t enough.

Man City U21s, meanwhile, needed penalties to overcome Rotherham. It was the League one side who took the lead thanks to David Ball’s first goal since signing from Fleetwood.

City equalised in stoppage time through Argentine teenager Benjamin Garre, meaning the game went to penalties.

And Charlie Oliver converted the decisive penalty for City, who won the shoot-out 4-2 to gain the extra point.

Elsewhere, it was League Two side Luton who took the extra penalty point after a draw with Tottenham U21s.

Luton took an early lead through Luke Gambin, with Tottenham levelling matters via a bizarre equaliser when Joe Pritchard’s shot rebounded, before going in off the back of James Shea.
Ryan Loft then put Spurs ahead early in the second half, but they were not in front for long, with Josh McQuoid’s header equalising for Luton.

The Hatters went on to win the shoot-out 4-2, Gambin with the winning penalty to give his side the extra point.

There were five goals at the County ground as West Ham U21 beat Swindon, with Martin Samuelsen making the most of a mistake by the Robins defence to hand the Hammers the lead.

Ben Purkiss’ cross then struck the arm of West Ham’s Vashon Neufville. The referee originally awarded a free kick, before changing his mind and giving a penalty, with Luke Norris scoring to bring his team level.

However, the Hammers were soon back in front through captain Moses Makasi, only for Swindon to again equalise courtesy of substitute Paul Mullin’s header.

It was West Ham, though, who clinched the win when Antonio Martinez’s shot came back off the post for Dan Kemp to tap in.

And finally, Swansea U21 came from a goal down to beat Cheltenham after Kyle Storer had given the League Two side the lead from a corner.

It was all square with 15 minutes to go thanks to Kenji Gorre’s free kick, before Aaron Lewis grabbed an 83rd-minute winner for the Swans.Euro Soccer Bonus
