Davinson Sanchez ‘a very lucky boy’ after not seeing red against Swansea, says Graeme Souness

Graeme Souness labelled Davinson Sanchez a „very lucky boy“ after he escaped a second yellow card during Tottenham’s 2-0 win at Swansea.

The Spurs defender was cautioned in the first half after bringing down Swansea defender Martin Olsson off the ball.

However, a challenge on the same player went unpunished in the second half, leading manager Mauricio Pochettino to bring him off for Victor Wanyama four minutes later.

In his post-match press conference, Pochettino admitted he substituted Sanchez for fear of the Colombian being sent off.

„We were all worried about the second yellow card,“ Pochettino said. „The first half yellow card wasn’t bad, but the fans started putting pressure on the referee (Bobby Madley) and it can become a problem. So I decided to take him off the pitch.“

Meanwhile, speaking in the Sky Sports studio, Souness said there was „no doubt“ Sanchez should have been given his marching orders.
„He’s a very lucky boy. I think he should have gone,“ Souness said. „The referee has a good look at this [the first incident] and fair play he sees it – it would have been very easy for him to focus on the ball, but he kept an eye on what’s happening in the middle. Sanchez grabs him, he maybe goes down easily but it is a foul

„The second one, there’s no doubt about it. Watch where he is making contact with the player and where the ball is.

„He’s nowhere near the ball, he doesn’t see Olsson till late and has a swipe at him. That’s a clear yellow card, he should have gone for that.“
Souness sympathised with Swansea manager Carlos Carvalhal, with Tottenham’s opener coming after Fernando Llorente headed in from an offside position, while Dele Alli was fortunate with a ricochet for their second late on.

„If you’re the Swansea manager, you’re looking at all those fortunate moments – they didn’t get any tonight,“ Souness added.

„The first goal is offside, the second is more of a deflection than anything else, and a sending off for Sanchez could have changed the game.
