Real Madrid v Manchester United talking points: Anthony Martial, Andreas Pereira and more

Bet365

Manchester United beat Real Madrid on penalties in the International Champions Cup on Sunday but who caught the eye at Levi’s Stadium?

It was another marquee friendly in the USA as United faced Champions League winners Real in their fourth pre-season match of the tour.

Jesse Lingard gave Jose Mourinho’s side the lead before Casemiro levelled from the spot, sending the match to a shootout that was won 2-1 by United.
We have picked out five talking points from the game in California…

Anthony Martial: The good and the bad

He has been challenged by Mourinho in the past and was named on the bench for the Manchester City friendly last week amid speculation over his future.

But given his chance on Sunday, he took full advantage and his assist for Lingard’s opener was the Martial of old.

He skipped away from Lucas Vazquez, Luka Modric and Dani Carvajal before getting his head up and picking out Lingard.

It was the hard running and close control that made him such a dangerous opponent in his early games for United.

And it is a timely reminder of how much United stand to benefit should Martial rediscover his best form ahead of the new campaign.

The one downside was any confidence gained from that first-half assist may have been lost in the shootout, when Martial blazed an ugly penalty over the crossbar.
A shootout to forget

Which brings us neatly onto the subject of penalties.

Just three of the 10 spot-kicks taken in the shootout were successful, with David de Gea and Kiko Casilla combining to save four.

Martial, Theo Hernandez and Casemiro managed to miss the target completely – although the Brazilian was perhaps unfortunate to see his firm strike hit the crossbar.

He had earlier scored from the spot to cancel out Lingard’s opener but his subsequent miss ended up costing his team the victory.
Andreas Pereira stakes a claim

“I am here and I want to stay here and I believe I am going to stay.”

Those were the words of Pereira in the build-up to Sunday’s match when asked about a possible loan move away from Old Trafford.

Having starred for Granada in La Liga last year, he was given the opportunity to impress against Spanish opposition and was another to catch the eye.

He lasted just 45 minutes before Mourinho made eight changes at the break but the 21-year-old’s contributions suggested he could play a role for United this season.

He was tidy in possession and tenacious in his defensive work, adding much-needed creativity alongside Marouane Fellaini in midfield.

Summer signings assessed

Victor Lindelof will be disappointed with his clumsy challenge on Hernandez that conceded the penalty and allowed Real back into the match.

The Swede was late and reckless and had no complaints when the referee pointed to the spot.

Romelu Lukaku failed to follow up on his impressive display against City and was barely involved following his introduction as Real controlled the second half.

The liveliest summer arrival was actually Real’s Hernandez, a €26m signing from city rivals Atletico Madrid.

He won the penalty to get Real back in the match and was an attacking threat down the left. It seems Zinedine Zidane has an able deputy for Marcelo.
Real’s young stars

The two teams combined to make 19 half-time changes but while Mourinho brought on the big guns – including Paul Pogba and Lukaku – Zidane introduced his youngsters.

The likes of Dani Gomez, Luis Miguel Quezada and Hernandez more than held their own and deservedly got their team on level terms midway through the half.

Most are unlikely to see much – if any – first-team action at the Bernabeu this season but Zidane will be very pleased with their performance against strong opposition.Euro Soccer Bonus
