Thierry Henry: Manchester City’s structure suits Raheem Sterling

Thierry Henry believes in-form Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling has benefited from playing in a team with a clear tactical structure this season.

Sterling has been sensational for his club this term, scoring 12 goals in 18 appearances in all competitions which is already his best-ever return for a club campaign.

The 22-year-old played a pivotal role in Manchester City’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Huddersfield on Sunday, earning the penalty for Sergio Aguero’s equaliser before scoring the winner himself.
Sterling has struggled to replicate his club form on the international stage so far, though, scoring just twice in 35 matches and he was criticised for his performances at Euro 2016.
However, Henry argued that England have not seen the best of Sterling as unlike Manchester City under Pep Guardiola, they do not have a clear footballing philosophy in place.

Speaking on Super Sunday post-match, Henry said: „He needs to know what he has to do, it’s as simple as that. He needs to know the plan, he needs to know the structure and he needs to know what his team are going to do so he can execute it.

„He’s playing with those guys [at Man City] every single day. When you go away with national teams it’s different, everyone has different ideas on how to play and what to do in training.

„What’s the plan with the team in England? How are they playing? I can see clearly what they are doing at Man City and he’s playing in a team that is winning games.“
While Sterling’s finishing has clearly evolved this term, his movement in the final third has also greatly improved as was evidenced against Huddersfield when he gave left-back Scott Malone a torrid time.

When playing for Manchester City, Sterling’s forwards runs are more often than not picked out by Kevin De Bruyne or David Silva and Henry suggested that has improved the England international.

„He is training every day with David Silva, Kevin De Bruyne in a system and you can see that he knows exactly what it is he needs to do,“ he said.

Manchester City’s win over Huddersfield at the John Smith’s Stadium took them eight points clear of Manchester United at the top of the table and means they have taken more points (37) than any other club after 13 games in Premier League history.
